We talk a lot about the power of employee ownership and how it impacts every aspect of the culture at VGM. That’s because when you own the place, you can make your place of work, work for you. You get the opportunity to create a future—not only for yourself, but for your family.  

Benefits Built for Families 

When employee owners are asked how they’d describe VGM, one word we consistently hear is family. Take a stroll around one of our locations and it’s easy to see why. Employee owners regularly bring their little ones in to meet the rest of the VGM family.  

It’s also common to see employee owners trying to convince their own family to apply. They try to recruit everyone—their kids, nieces and nephews, grandkids, even first cousins twice removed.  

Part of that enthusiasm has to do with the fact that our benefits at VGM are built by families, for families. In other words, we take care of each other. Here are just a few examples:  

• Paid parental leave – Bringing a new child into the family is an exciting time! VGM offers qualifying employees paid parental leave at the time of a live birth, adoption, or when a child is placed in the employee’s foster care.  

• Free health clinic – The VGM Free Health Clinic is offered as a free benefit to provide health services at a convenient location, with walk-in and same-day appointments available for everyone in your family. The clinic offers a variety of health services, including sports and school physicals, well child visits, and immunizations.  

• VGM Family Fund – This is an employee-funded program that pulls us together to assist a fellow employee owner who is in true need. Whether they’re dealing with a temporary setback or a life-changing event, we’re here for them, as a family, to provide financial support to help get them back on their feet. 

• Pet insurance – When we say we’re family friendly, we mean the whole family. VGM partners with Bivvy to offer pet insurance for the dogs and cats (and now rabbits, rodents, reptiles, and birds) in the family! 

Family Gatherings 

One of the hallmarks of being part of a family is having fun together. And VGM certainly knows how to do that. Fun is so important, in fact, we put it up on the walls.  

“One of our guiding principles at VGM is Find the Fun in Your Day,” said Christa Miehe, president of Moxie, VGM’s full-service marketing and events agency. “Having fun is essential to doing your best work. It helps us recharge, but more importantly, it brings us together as a family.”  

To facilitate fun, VGM holds monthly employee-engagement events, such as ping pong tournaments, happy hour, and even an entire summer series of events, featuring pickleball, bags, and trivia.  

At least once each quarter, VGM also sponsors an event that’s fun for the whole family. Some of our favorites include: 

• Baby Boom – Over the past three years, we’ve seen a record number of little ones joining the VGM family. In true VGM style, we celebrate all the new and expecting parents with an annual Baby Boom event. 

• Tour De Farm – We invite employee owners and their families to the VGM Farm for a guided bike ride or a tour of the farmhouse to see the themed rooms, movie theater, jukebox, and more.  

• VGM 5K & Haunted Hustle – This great event is to help promote wellness for all our employees. The VGM 5K & Haunted Hustle is free for VGM employees and their family members.  

• Easter Eggstravaganza – The event brings employee owners together to catch up with others while watching their family have a fun afternoon at the farm. This hoppy day features a coloring contest, cookie decorating, and a massive Easter egg hunt. 

• Holiday Giving – Each year, VGM employees help local foster care families celebrate the holidays by donating gifts to Black Hawk County Foster & Adoptive Parent Support.
